Girl dies nearly 2 years after shooting accident that killed her father

Nearly two years after her father was gunned down while walking with two of his young children on a street in Birmingham, Alabama, his daughter, now four years old, died as a result of an accident caused by the shooting.

Four-year-old Madison Grace Davis died in June, her family confirmed on a GoFundMe campaign last week.

Her relative, Tiffany Davis, said on the fundraising page that Madison “suffered a traumatic brain injury” in the accident.

“Despite her incredible strength and courageous fight, she has now left us and our hearts are broken,” Davis wrote.

Madison’s father, Demarkus Etwasn Moss, Sr., was driving with his children along Arkadelphia Road shortly before 6 p.m. on Friday, September 2, 2022, when someone in a nearby car “began shooting at his vehicle,” Birmingham police said in a news release at the time.

Struck by gunfire, Moss continued driving for about half a mile before colliding with another vehicle.

When police arrived on the scene, they found Moss slumped over the steering wheel, “obviously suffering from a gunshot wound,” the press release said.

Moss, who was the target of the shooting, was pronounced dead by police at the scene.

According to police, first responders found his then two-year-old daughter Madison “unresponsive.”

In an email to PEOPLE, Officer Truman Fitzgerald says Madison was not shot and that “her fatal injuries were caused by the accident.”

Her little brother was not seriously injured in the accident.

Madison and the injured occupants of the other vehicle were taken to different hospitals.

Madison was subsequently released from the hospital and later readmitted due to complications, AL.com reported.

After the accident, the little girl was never able to speak or walk again, the source says.

An online tribute to Moss said he had four children and was known by the nickname “Bobo.”

“I pray the kids are okay after all this,” one person commented on the page.

Bill Yates, deputy coroner for the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, confirmed to PEOPLE that Madison died at Children’s Hospital of Alabama on Tuesday, June 25. The cause and manner of death have not yet been confirmed.

According to AL.com, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin took to social media after the shooting and asked for tips in the unsolved case.

“I’m sick of these cowards hurting our children,” the mayor wrote. “Enough is enough.”

Nearly two years later, police told PEOPLE that there are still no suspects in the fatal shooting and the investigation remains open.
