Match Preview: Atlanta United travels to New England to kick off double-header week

New England Revolution, meanwhile, have had a successful month, winning four of their five MLS games in June, including victories over FC Cincinnati, Nashville SC and New York Red Bulls. Most recently, they faced reigning MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew and lost 5-1.

Atlanta United lead the series against New England Revolution with a 5-4-4 record in MLS. Their last meeting was on March 9 in Atlanta’s home opener. Thiago Almada scored and Giorgos Giakoumakis added a second-half hat-trick to give Atlanta United a 4-1 victory at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in front of one of the largest crowds in the world to watch soccer that weekend.

Brooks Lennon (Atlanta United) – Atlanta United’s starting XI has fluctuated throughout the season, but Brooks Lennon has been a constant. The Paradise Valley, Arizona, guard has logged the most minutes of any player on the team, starting in all 20 of Atlanta United’s regular-season games in 2024. The 26-year-old is well-deserving of his nickname, Mr. Reliable. On Saturday, Lennon made his 150th appearance for Atlanta United in all competitions, the fourth-most in club history.

Carles Gil (New England Revolution) – The Spanish Designated Player has caused problems for Atlanta United every time these two teams have met. In 2023, Gil scored in the first minute of play against Atlanta and finished the night with a brace. In the most recent sense, the 2021 MLS MVP was the only goal scorer for New England, denying Atlanta a potential shutout in the 4-1 victory.
