Akron man arrested after standoff

According to official reports, the standoff lasted four hours.

AKRON, Ohio – A man was arrested following a standoff in Akron on Monday.

According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, 41-year-old James Swisher was arrested after officers attempted to execute a felony warrant at a residence on Elma Street.

When officers arrived at the scene, they saw three men outside the home, including Swisher. Two of the men spoke with officers while Swisher entered the home.

Of these two men, officers arrested 56-year-old George Sport of Akron, who also had two arrest warrants against him.

While attempting to free Swisher from the apartment, additional deputies, detectives and Summit County Sheriff’s Akron Police officers arrived at the scene, as well as the Summit County Sheriff’s SWAT team hostage negotiation team and a drone team.

Officials said that after obtaining a search warrant for the home and a four-hour standoff, the sheriff’s SWAT team entered the home and found Swisher hiding in the basement.

According to official information, Swisher was accused of:

  • Drug trafficking
  • Possession of a weapon despite disability
  • Domestic violence
  • attack
  • Drug possession

Swisher is currently being held in the Summit County Jail.
