A group of young boys are accused of dragging a disabled girl into the school toilet and raping her, but the incident is not being investigated further.

The suspects, believed to be at least eight students aged between 11 and 12, attacked the 12-year-old girl at her school in Peñaflor, Seville, Spain. The defenseless child was reportedly “removed from the view of students and teachers and taken to the girls’ bathroom” during a break.

In the days following the incident, the girl’s family noticed something was wrong with her after she began acting “strange” and displaying “bad manners,” even though she is not normally like that. Her grandmother described the ordeal, saying the little girl had been through “hell” since the attack.

The grandmother, who wishes to remain anonymous, told Telemadrid that the girl did not want to return to school and could not eat or sleep. Her grandfather said the school claimed the attack did not take place, Sur said in English. He explained: “She seemed very nervous and confessed to us, her older sister and me, what had been done to her, even revealing one by one who the attackers were.”

He added: “I am eagerly awaiting the medical report so I can show it to the school principal, who does not believe this happened, even if I have to go to his house to present it.” However, Spanish Juvenile states that a rapist who is under 14 years old is not liable under the law. Due to this legal loophole, the case was referred to the Child Protection Service.

Loles Lopez, Andalusian councillor for social inclusion, youth, family and equality, said at a press conference last week: “From now on we will take all the necessary measures to protect the girl, including, of course, identifying the causes of this behaviour and, on that basis, taking the appropriate measures.”

The legal action has sparked a fierce reaction on social media after it was revealed that the boys are not being investigated further, reports The Sun. One Twitter user said: “Unless urgent legislation is passed these atrocities will continue, once again in a school that washes its hands of the crime.” Another user wrote: “Please what is happening to society? We are obviously doing it wrong and we are doing the children an injustice.”
