Herkimer man arrested in HPD drug raid

HERKIMER, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – According to Herkimer police, a Herkimer man is currently in custody on his fourth felony charge following a raid on his William Street residence on Wednesday, May 8 the Herkimer County Correctional Facility.

Herkimer Police received numerous complaints Wednesday about suspicious activity at 307 William Street, particularly the sale of crack cocaine. After obtaining information and monitoring the apartment, an arrest warrant was issued.


At around 6 a.m. Wednesday, the Special Response Team – made up of officers from the Herkimer, Little Falls and Mohawk police departments – executed the arrest warrant. They located the subject of the investigation – later identified as 40-year-old Chad Wellington of Herkimer – as they left on foot. Wellington was immediately arrested and a search of his person revealed that he was allegedly in possession of crack cocaine.

A search of the William Street residence revealed a quantity of packaging material and several scales.

Based on the investigation to date and the results of the search, Wellington has been accused of:

  • Third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell, a Class B felony, and
  • Second-degree criminal use of drug paraphernalia, a Class A misdemeanor.

Wellington was charged and booked into the Herkimer County Correctional Facility. According to Herkimer police, he was being held without bail because he had four previous felony convictions – three of them drug-related.

Herkimer Police were assisted by the Herkimer County District Attorney’s Office, the Mohawk and Little Falls Police Departments, the Herkimer and Little Falls Fire Departments, the Mohawk Valley Ambulance Corps and the New York State Police K-9 Unit.
