Four people, including a seven-year-old, die in accidents on I-95 in Central Florida – NBC 6 South Florida

Four people, including a seven-year-old boy, were killed in a rear-end collision involving five vehicles on Interstate 95 in Indian River County, Florida, on Monday.

The pileup occurred at about 2:15 a.m. at mile marker 153 near Fellsmere, about 20 miles from Vero Beach.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2009 Toyota Camry driven by a 37-year-old Miami woman initially struck a 2001 Suzuki Vitara driven by a 40-year-old Miami man while traveling northbound.

A Dodge Journey, driven by a 40-year-old woman and carrying a man and four children under the age of 10, then crashed into the Vitara.

The other drivers got out to help the people in the Dodge, but while they were still on the road, a Freightliner semi-trailer truck driven by a 63-year-old man from Miami approached.

The driver of the semi-truck “could not see what was going on due to the lighting and struck the left side of the Dodge Journey,” FHP Trooper Raeford Griffin told NBC affiliate WPTV.

A person in the Dodge was ejected from the vehicle, FHP said.

According to authorities, the truck also hit and killed the drivers of the Vitara and Camry.

The last vehicle to crash was a Chrysler Pacifica, which swerved but still crashed into the Camry.

According to FHP, a 27-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman from Ontario, Canada, were in the Pacifica and had to be taken to the hospital.

According to authorities, two people in the Dodge were killed in the accident – the driver and a seven-year-old boy.

The other occupants of the Dodge survived and were taken to the hospital, FHP said. They are a 42-year-old man, a 9-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy and a 2-month-old boy. The 9-year-old is in stable condition, but his current condition is unknown.

The northbound lanes of I-95 were closed in this area for hours and did not reopen until around 2 p.m.
