Fatal shooting in Haverstraw near Fairmount Avenue under investigation

HAVERSTRAW – The 29-year-old Pomona man who was shot and killed Monday knew his shooter, police said Tuesday as they continue to search for the gunman.

When officers responded to reports of shots fired, they found Christian Alvarado lying on the ground next to a vehicle that had crashed into a parked car across from 9 Fairmount Avenue, Police Chief John Gould said.

Officers found Alvarado’s body lying on the ground next to the vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso, Gould said. The shooting occurred in the area of West Street and Fairmount Avenue.

“The shooting was not random,” Gould said. “The suspect and the victim knew each other.”

Gould said that “a suspicious person was arrested on New Main Street on Monday evening” but “was questioned and then released.”

While rescue workers attempted to keep Alvarado alive at the scene of the accident and on the way to the hospital, he was pronounced dead at Montefiore Nyack Hospital.

Police reportedly searched for at least one man after the shooting. Officers blocked off both streets. Paramedics from the Haverstraw Ambulance Corps were dispatched.

“We are in the early stages of the investigation and are trying to interview witnesses and find surveillance video of the incident,” Gould said Monday evening.

Monday’s shooting was the fourth homicide in Rockland in 2024. The others occurred in Stony Point, Spring Valley and Ramapo. Rockland police were investigating four homicides in 2023.

The shooting was the second fatality since Gould took over as police chief less than a week ago. A 13-year-old boy from Pomona died Wednesday afternoon when he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle. Gould called the accident tragic.
