Green warning: More than 400,000 tourists vacation in Cancun as Hurricane Beryl approaches

Riviera Maya, QR — More than 400,000 tourists are currently vacationing in the region as Hurricane Beryl heads toward Quintana Roo. Bernardo Cueto, head of the State Tourism Secretariat (Sedetur), says all state authorities are prepared to activate protocols for Beryl’s imminent arrival.

Cueto said there are currently 423,000 tourists vacationing in the state, including 298,000 international tourists. He says hotels and consulates will work with Sedetur to activate the guest locator in case evacuations are necessary.

The flight path has shifted north towards the Riviera Maya.

Cueto says a meeting with the governor is scheduled for Tuesday, at which time the state emergency management agency will likely begin activating protocols regarding hotels, transportation vehicles, cruises, ferries and the state’s airports.

An update from July 2 shows Berly landing in the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.

Francisco Fernández, president of the Nautical Association of Quintana Roo, says they are closely following official updates and that for now they will continue operating normally, at least until Wednesday.

As of Tuesday morning, Hurricane Beryl has been a catastrophic Category 5 hurricane. Due to its proximity to the coast of Quintana Roo, civil protection has issued a green warning of medium danger.

According to updated trajectories, Hurricane Beryl could make landfall as a Category 1 hurricane near the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve south of Tulum sometime on Friday.
