FAW suspends president Steve Williams while searching for new manager

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) has suspended President Steve Williams.

WalesOnline has learned that the FAW Council was informed of the decision last week and Williams has been suspended pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

The reason for the suspension is not yet known and a date for Williams’ hearing has not yet been set.

Williams told BBC Sport Wales: “I cannot comment on that. That is for the FAW to comment on.”

Williams’ term as FAW President currently expires one year after he was elected to the office in 2021.

Previously, he served as a member of the Council for over 20 years and also served one term as Vice-President.

The news comes amid the ongoing search for a new head coach for the men’s national team after Rob Page was sacked earlier this summer.

Williams, who is responsible for overseeing all levels of Welsh football, was involved in the decision to sack Page. Page was relieved of his duties following a disappointing international double-header which saw Wales play a goalless draw with Gibraltar and a heavy defeat to Slovakia.

Craig Bellamy and Thierry Henry have emerged as early contenders for the post. Osian Roberts was also approached, but declared himself no longer in the running on Monday evening.

It is understood that the FAW will take its time in appointing a new head coach. The next international training session is currently planned for the autumn, when Wales kick off their UEFA Nations League campaign at home to Turkey on 6 September, before travelling to Montenegro three days later.
