Man shot by Atwater police files complaint

ATWATER, Calif. (KFSN) – The family of a man shot and killed by Atwater police in 2023 has filed a complaint accusing the city and officers involved of wrongful death and excessive use of force.

The complaint comes months after police released bodycam footage of the incident.

In August 2023, police attempted to stop 36-year-old Korey Unti, who was driving an SUV and was connected to a theft case.

According to police, Unti refused to stop for officers and led them on a chase while shooting at their vehicles.

While police were pursuing him through an apartment complex near the corner of Crest and Bellevue Road, investigators said he pointed a gun at a police officer.

Unti was shot and did not survive.

However, the complaint accuses the officer of firing several shots, even after Unti was disarmed.

It is further stated that the officers did not follow the prescribed procedure and handcuffed Unti even though he had suffered serious injuries.

Unti’s family is now demanding $20 million in damages.

No lawsuit has been filed so far.
