Montgomery County’s annual Bike & Roll to School Day celebration will be held on Wednesday, May 8, from 8:15 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. at Bayard Rustin Elementary School in Rockville. Chris Conklin, director of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation, and representatives from the county’s Vision Zero initiative are expected to attend the event.

Bike & Roll to School Day activities include distribution of safety materials. The special guests greet students and parents and encourage them to bike to school.

The first-ever National Bike to School Day was held on May 9, 2012, in coordination with the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Month.

On May 8, thousands of schools across the United States – from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico – will participate in Bike & Roll to School events. The initiative focuses on a healthy lifestyle and safety. Schools and surrounding neighborhoods are participating in the campaign by raising awareness of traffic rules, increasing physical activity and sensitizing drivers to share the road with cyclists.

Event partners include the Montgomery County Police Department, Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service and Montgomery County Public Schools.
