RESTAURANT

In fact, there may well be no such thing as a chicken wing.

Americans eat a lot of chicken wings. In fact, the National Chicken Council says that more than a billion wings are seasoned, mixed, cooked, and consumed each year. When we sit down to a chicken wing dinner, we eat an average of 16 chicken wings in one sitting.

People were eating chicken wings before 1964, but that year something happened that ruffled feathers — in a good way — everywhere.

Teressa Bellissimo mixed chicken with a butter and hot sauce blend at her restaurant Anchor Bar and gave us Buffalo chicken wings, named after the city where they were created.

While any time is a good time to eat wings, July 29 is National Chicken Wing Day.

We celebrated the event early at Dirty Buffalo, a vibrant and highly engaging restaurant with locations throughout the Chesapeake, Norfolk and Virginia Beach areas.

BUSINESS AND FLIGHTS

Wednesday is the perfect day to rejoice at Dirty Buffalo. Every week from 5pm to 9pm, all wings are half price, dine-in only. There is a 15-wing limit for this meal deal.

Wings are a meal deal on Wednesdays, with half-price orders for up to 15 from 5 to 9 p.m. We took an order of five classic hot wings and an order of 10 wings: half Nashville hot mustard and half Ragin' Cajun dry rub. (Patrick Evans-Hylton/Freelance)

Regular prices are five wings for $7.99, 10 wings for $15.99 and 15 wings for $21.99.

The half-price deal is valid for bone-in or boneless wings. I chose bone-in wings because it’s the classic method and – I’m just going to say it – boneless wings are nothing more than glorified nuggets.

There are 30 different flavor options, including about two dozen sauces and nearly a dozen dry rubs.

The flavors can be split 50/50. We wanted to try three flavors, so we took an order of five classic hot wings and an order of 10 wings: half Nashville Hot Mustard and half Ragin’ Cajun Dry Sauce.

The wings were perfect. The thighs and wings had a crispy exterior and lots of juicy meat underneath. The classic spiciness was exceptional, and it was what I imagine a wing to be. It was super hot with a tangy flavor and heat that took me by surprise.

I also loved the Nashville Spicy Mustard. These wings were coated in a yellow sauce that reminded me of a Carolina mustard barbecue sauce. It had a lot of heat and a mild heat. I admit I licked my fingers when I saw it.

I also really liked the Ragin’ Cajun, which had a nice texture and a bright flavor thanks to lots of spices. It reminded me a lot of a seasoned chicken rub, in a good way.

There are a number of drink specials on weekdays from 4 to 7 p.m., and we enjoyed discounted house margaritas for $5 (normally $7). The tequila-based drink was balanced and flavorful with plenty of tart lime.

We loved the crispy exterior and soft interior with melty cheese and intense pepperoni flavor. If you’re dining with friends, appetizers are half price for buy one, get one of equal or lesser value daily from 4-7 p.m.

Three pizza logs are delivered per order, at the regular price of $6.99.
