Opposition leader Ambadas Danve suspended from Maharashtra Legislative Council for ‘offensive remarks’ | Mumbai News

Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, Ambadas Danve of the Shiv Sena UBT, has been suspended for five days for allegedly misbehaving and using abusive language in Parliament on Monday.

Council vice-chairman Neelam Gorhe on Tuesday lashed out at Danve after the Shiv Sena UBT leader allegedly used abusive language. On Monday, Parliament erupted over Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s scathing attack on the BJP in the Lok Sabha. Gandhi had alleged that those who call themselves Hindus were spreading “violence and hatred”.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi opposed Danve’s suspension and demanded a discussion on the issue. However, when Deputy Chairman Gorhe refused to give in, the Opposition MLCs walked out of the hall in protest.

Shiv Sena UBT leader and former Maharashtra chief minister Uddhav Thackeray termed the act undemocratic. “Ambadas should have been given an opportunity to present his side of the story. But that was not allowed. No one was allowed to speak or discuss the issue. This would be the first time in history that an opposition leader has been suspended without discussion and in a pre-determined manner in revenge. The people of Maharashtra are watching the injustice against the opposition leader who raised the voice of the people in Parliament,” Thackeray said on the Vidhan Sabha premises.

Earlier, the session of the Maharashtra Legislative Council was adjourned three times as BJP MP Pravin Darekar raised objections to Danve’s alleged use of foul language in Parliament the previous day.

At the start of the hearing, Darekar demanded a discussion on Danve’s alleged use of foul language on Monday night in his response to a discussion on Rahul Gandhi’s speech in the Lok Sabha.

Gorhe urged Darekar to end the Question Hour, but Darekar insisted on discussing the issue in Parliament.

“The sanctity of the Legislative Council must be maintained, especially by the Leader of the Opposition,” Darekar said.

Gorhe said the matter was serious and a decision could be taken only after reviewing video clips of the remarks and gathering more details.

Expressing his disapproval, Darekar alleged that Danve had not only used foul language in the House but had also spoken about it in the media, raising doubts about the seriousness of his conduct.

He made use of his right to speak and threatened to disrupt the deliberations in Parliament, whereupon Gorhe initially adjourned the session for an hour.

When the debate later resumed, there was a heated argument in Parliament over the same issue, and the Vice-Chairman subsequently adjourned the debate twice more until 2 p.m.

On Monday, In the upper house of the state, there was a debate about the issue BJP MP Prasad Lad and Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Ambadas Danve (Shiv Sena UBT) adopted an aggressive stance and allegedly used unparliamentary language against each other.

The state’s ruling Mahayuti Alliance, of which the BJP is a member, demanded that a resolution be passed in the council and forwarded to the Lok Sabha condemning Rahul Gandhi for his alleged anti-Hindu remarks.
