Man who raped a sleeping woman must go to prison for 15 years

A 42-year-old man from Chief Gambiza area of Gweru has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Gweru Magistrate Court for raping a sleeping woman last month.

According to the court file, on June 7, 2024, at around 11:00 p.m., the defendant gained access to the plaintiff’s bedroom, where she was sleeping naked next to her two-year-old child.

The defendant then took off his pants and raped the sleeping woman.

The plaintiff woke up during the attack and was able to identify the defendant by lighting a flashlight.

The perpetrator asked for forgiveness and begged the victim not to report the incident to anyone before fleeing the scene.

The plaintiff then called her husband home around midnight and informed him about the attack.

A report was filed with the police, which led to the arrest of the rapist and subsequently to his trial and conviction.
