Suspect dies of self-inflicted wound in Bedford incident

The Bedford County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance in the Montvale area on Sunday that resulted in a male suspect taking his own life with a firearm, according to a news release from Sheriff Mike Miller.

At about 4:45 p.m. Sunday, the sheriff’s office responded to a dispute involving a weapon in the 4000 block of Mountain View Church Road, the news release said. One victim was able to get to another address to make a 911 call, according to Miller’s statement Monday afternoon.

“Officers arrived and searched the area for the suspect,” the release said. “The suspect later returned to the area and while attempting to flee, he struck a sheriff’s vehicle and fled the area.”

During further searches, officers discovered a vehicle with the driver inside in a field, the press release said.

The suspect then barricaded himself in the vehicle while officers continued to make contact with him, the press release said.

“This brief standoff involved multiple special forces units and the suspect fired shots into the air,” the sheriff’s office said. “The suspect later used the weapon to take his own life. There was no further threat to the area or citizens, this was an isolated incident.”

The investigation is ongoing and Miller said no further information will be released at this time. Anyone with additional information can contact the Investigations Division at (540) 586-4800.
