Two Maui men arrested on suspicion of nighttime hunting on road that runs through Oprah’s ranch | News, Sports, Jobs


Luke Allen and Ty Munoz, both 19, of Upcountry Maui were arrested following a traffic stop.

KAHULUI – Just before midnight on Friday, June 21, officers with the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE) stopped two men after observing them allegedly using a spotlight for hunting purposes. The incident occurred near the intersection of Thompson Road and Kamaʻole Road in the Kula area of ​​Maui’s Upcountry. Thompson Road is a public road that runs through private property owned by the Oprah Winfrey Ranch.

Luke Allen and Ty Munoz, both 19, of Upcountry Maui, were arrested after a stop. They were transported to the Maui Police Department in Wailuku for registration. The case has been forwarded to the Maui County District Attorney’s Office for review and charging.

DOCARE officers found a loaded shotgun and a loaded rifle in the couple’s truck. Further investigation revealed that Allen and Munoz were hunting without a valid license, had ammunition in the vehicle, and allegedly hunted on private property at night without a permit. Officers say the rifle Allen had with him was unregistered.

Allen was arrested and charged with the following alleged violations of the Hawai’i Revised Statutes (HRS) and the Hawai’i Administrative Rules (HAR):

HRS 134-23(A) Place for storing loaded firearms (except pistols)

HRS 183D-21 Hunting license required

HRS 183D-27 Hunting at night on private property without permission

HRS 134-27(A) Ammunition storage location

HAR 13-123-7 Artificial light prohibited (for hunting with the use of artificial light)

HRS 134-3 Registration requirement (for unregistered semi-automatic rifles of .22 caliber)

Munoz was arrested and charged with the following alleged violations of the Hawai’i Revised Statutes (HRS) and the Hawai’i Administrative Rules (HAR):

HRS 134-23(A) Place for storing loaded firearms (except pistols)

HRS 183D-21 Hunting license required

HRS 183D-27 Hunting at night on private property without permission

HAR 13-123-7 Artificial light prohibited (for hunting with the use of artificial light)
