Sonic and Buffalo Wild Wings launch in hopes of Berlin opening in July

Reading time: 4 minutes

Two restaurants are set to open soon in Berlin Township, New Jersey. Sonic and Buffalo Wild Wings GO appear set to open. Unofficially, they are hoping to open later this month (July), but no dates have been set for sure.

I stopped by yesterday to check out the interesting combination restaurant project, which took a single former Arby’s building and split it in two, creating two distinct dining experiences.

On the left side is Sonic Drive-In, which also features nine unique drive-in parking spots with a menu ordering panel, where cars can “drive up” to a spot with its own menu ordering panel, place an order while parked, and have their food delivered right to the car!

The Sonic restaurant also has a traditional drive-thru.

Buffalo Wild Wings GO (BWW Go) occupies the right half of the building, offering a smaller menu focused on their delicious wings, fries, chicken sandwiches and more… but there’s no bar! A Voorhees location opened in February of this year.

No opening date has yet been announced for either restaurant as there appear to have been unexpected delays in the final stages of construction.

Online, I’ve seen mentions of July 19th as the target date for Sonic to open, but this hasn’t been confirmed by upper management. At this point, they probably want to wait until all the details are 100% finalized before making a definitive announcement on the opening date.

And now that the buildings appear to be almost ready to open, including all the asphalt in place and the aisle markings… I’m getting a lot of questions about the status of the store openings.

So I wanted to at least share what little information I know, and I will probably visit and post an update when they officially open.

News of the proposed dual restaurant development at 42Freeway was first announced in June of last year.

Sonic Drive-In

If you’re not familiar with Sonic Drive-In, the popular restaurant brand offers delicious, fresh burgers, hot dogs and ice cream, including milkshakes… with an innovative 1950s-style drive-thru model where you can order from your car and have the food delivered to your car!

They also have a very popular line of fun commercials that highlight an ever-changing special menu, designed to get you out of your chair and into your car… Grab a delicious lunch or treat at your local Sonic.

They also offer traditional drive-thru service and typically do not offer indoor dining.

For the drive-thru experience, each of the nine dedicated parking spaces has its own menu panel on the side.

The menu is a traditional printed menu with backlighting around the outside, and in the center is a digital screen where they display your order and totals, as well as current promotional offers.

Combos include cheeseburgers and chicken sandwiches on your choice of bun or toast. A variety of hot dogs, including a foot-long Coney Island hot dog. Popcorn chicken and tenders are also offered.

Breakfast is also offered, and of course their incredible “Frozen Zone” of shakes, blasts and sundaes.

Wild Wings Buffalo Chicken Wings

Buffalo Wild Wings is best known for its large restaurants that offer delicious chicken wings as well as a much larger full menu and full bar.

What’s opening in Berlin is a new branch of Buffalo Wild Wings, which is a much smaller restaurant and tends to focus only on its best-selling quick-service items, such as chicken wings, chicken sandwiches and fries.

BWW GO locations have a small indoor dining area, but it appears that much of the model is based on takeout and delivery.

To be blunt, BW go’s goal is to compete directly in the same market as Wingstop.

It’s likely that the Buffalo Wild Wings management team noticed the significant growth in wing stop locations and, realizing that Buffalo Wild Wings also had amazing wings…they decided to create the BWW GO concept.

As mentioned before, they opened a location in Voorhees, NJ that I was able to visit. I was surprised to see that they also sell burgers in Voorhees. I don’t know if that will be the case with the BMW GO in Berlin… I wonder since they are attached to a Sonic that changed the menu options.
