One soldier dies, five injured after accident at Malmstrom Air Force Base • Daily Montanan

According to a press release from Malmstrom, one soldier died and five were injured after a car accident on Saturday at Malmstrom Air Force Base.

The press release said three soldiers were injured in the accident and two other soldiers from the rescue unit were injured while providing assistance at the scene. All five were taken to medical facilities.

Malmstrom said no information about the deceased would be released until the family had been notified.

The cause of the accident is currently being investigated, Malmstrom said in Sunday’s press release.

Malmstrom did not disclose the cause of death, whether the pilots were on duty, or describe the circumstances of the accident.

Malmstrom is the headquarters of the 341st Missile Wing, which consists of more than 3,300 active-duty soldiers and 600 civilians. It is one of three U.S. Air Force bases responsible for monitoring Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles.

A spokesman declined to provide further information on Monday morning, but said Malmström would likely have more details later in the afternoon.

“The safety and well-being of all our soldiers is our priority and we are providing support and assistance to those affected by this tragic event,” Malmstrom said in the press release.

Col. Dan Voorhies, commander of the 341st Missile Wing, said Malmstrom needs time to grieve and heal.

“Our focus right now is to ensure that our entire Malmstrom team has the support it needs to get through this difficult time,” Voorhies said in a statement.
