Houston Astros ‘need to make move’ for arm after burning pitchers vs. Mets

The Houston Astros are now one game above .500 after winning another series against the New York Mets this weekend. 9-1 in their last 10 games, these are the Astros everyone expected to see at the start of the season.

While they’ll need to continue playing like this over the next few weeks to solidify things and prove they’re back, this was as promising a sign as it gets.

Once considered a team that could sell at the trade deadline, despite Dana Brown’s statements that he wouldn’t, this only confirms that Houston will be a buyer as they look to win another World Series.

Brown told reporters in early June that he had “no plans” to be a seller, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic.

“I’ve seen teams blow five- to seven-game leads in September. In Atlanta, when we won the World Series, we didn’t get to .500 until the 100th game,” Brown said. “I don’t think we’re going to be sellers at all. We’re going to fight. I think we’re going to get back to .500 before people realize it and we’ll be back in the race.”

Brown’s prediction was correct, as his club is now one of the hottest in Major League Baseball.

However, starting Monday, they might encounter a problem in their upcoming four-game set against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Astros used a lot of their arms against the Mets, and Rome figures they’ll have to make a move for a new arm after playing an 11-inning game Sunday.

“The Astros may have to make a move for a new arm after today’s 11-inning game. Shawn Dubin will be down for a while. Bryan King had six outs today. Tayler Scott threw three days in a row. Seth Martinez and Ryan Pressly happened two days in a row,” Rome tweeted.

If Houston is considering buying before the trade deadline, why not go out and make a move for this upcoming series? One name that continues to be mentioned in trade rumors is Detroit Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty.

Flaherty would be a great addition to this depleted rotation, as he has been one of the best arms in baseball during the 2024 campaign.

The California native posted a 3.24 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, 3.04 FIP and struck out 115 batters in 89.0 innings pitched.

Solidifying this rotation should be the goal as the deadline approaches, and Flaherty would help in that regard.
