Maulana held for sexual assault of minor boy in Assam: Police | Latest News India

Silchar: A 35-year-old Maulana (Islamic religious teacher) was arrested in Assam’s South Salmara district for allegedly sexually molesting a minor boy in a madrasa, police said.

Police said that the maulana, who works at the south Salmara madrasa, was beaten up by a group of people on Wednesday afternoon after the incident came to light and was later handed over to the police.

According to locals, the maulana had attacked the minor boy several times after which he stopped going to the madarsa.

“His behavior has changed recently and he was afraid of class. When we inquired, he admitted that he was subjected to sexual assault,” said a family member of the minor boy.

Police said they received a complaint from the boy’s father on Wednesday and based on that, registered a case against the Maulana under Section 342 (wrongful imprisonment) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 6 of the Protection of Children Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO ).

South Salmara Superintendent of Police (SP) Horen Tokbi said the arrested Maulana would be produced in court on Thursday.

“We recorded the statements and also secured evidence. Further investigation is underway,” he said.
