Fatal pedestrian accident in Bethlehem under investigation

BETHLEHEM, N.Y. (NEWS10) — State police are investigating a fatal crash involving a Bethlehem pedestrian. Police say James Gibson Jr., 36, was struck on the highway and succumbed to his injuries while walking in the right lane.

At approximately 1:59 a.m. Sunday, state police responded to the area of ​​Exit 23 on southbound I-87 in Bethlehem for a report of a pedestrian struck by a car. Police said Gibson Jr. was walking in the right lane when a southbound car struck him.


The car stopped immediately and called emergency services. Gibson Jr. succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident.

The right lane of I-87 was closed for about five and a half hours for the investigation and reconstruction of the crash. The investigation is ongoing and police say the driver involved cooperated fully.
