Shooting occurred early Monday near the Wharf development in the southwest, police said

According to police, the new month began early Monday with two shootings, one of them near the Wharf development in the southwest, after a period of violence in the district during the last two days of June.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m., a man was injured on a short street in the middle of the redeveloped residential, restaurant and entertainment district along the Washington Channel in the southwest.

The victim was found at District Square, which runs between Wharf Street and Maine Avenue SW, police said.

When he was taken to the hospital, he was conscious and breathing.

There was initially no information about the suspect or the motive.

Just minutes earlier, police said, officers found another shooting victim in the 4000 block of Minnesota Avenue NE.

He was also reportedly conscious and breathing when taken to the hospital. No information on a suspect or motive was available.

As of early Monday morning, nothing was known to link the two shootings. Nor was there any connection to the more than half-a-dozen shootings that occurred in the city on Saturday and Sunday, two of which were fatal.
