Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s claim that the last 10 years of his rule were just a foretaste and a “picture abhi baaki hai”, saying the NDA’s third term had seen leaked exam papers, a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, a train accident, collapse of airport canopies, collapsing bridges and toll hike.

Participating in the discussion on the motion of thanks for the President’s address in the Rajya Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Kharge said the Prime Minister had stated many times during the Lok Sabha election campaign, “The last ten years were just a trailer, the real picture is yet to come.”

“We could imagine what the Prime Minister’s picture would look like last month,” Kharge joked.

Kharge cited many recent incidents, including leaks of exam papers, cancellation of numerous exams, a train accident, three terrorist attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, water damage in the Ram Temple, collapse of roofs at three airports, hike in tolls and devaluation of the rupee.

Kharge said the future of 300,000 students was at risk due to the recent paper leaks.

“If this continues, students will drop out of college,” he said

There have been 70 document leaks in the last seven years, Kharge said, adding that this has affected the future of 20 million students.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House further said that the government was not taking any action on the matter and blamed the opposition parties for raising the issue in Parliament.

He called on the government to improve the country’s examination system.

He expressed dismay at the President’s address in the joint session of Parliament last week and said there was no mention of the situation in Manipur in the speech.

Kharge said the Prime Minister had not visited Manipur, where fires have been burning for a year.

The LoP said the President’s address to Parliament contained neither vision nor direction and attacked the ruling party for only raising slogans and not doing any development work.

Kharge said the president’s speech also “ignored” the challenges facing the country and tried to hide the government’s failures.

He said the President’s address did not mention the poor, Dalits and minorities at all.

He attacked Prime Minister Modi, saying that opposition parties were talking about the plight of common people while Modi was only doing ‘Mann Ki Baat’.

Kharge said Modi was an expert in just uttering slogans.

He accused the Prime Minister of trying to divide society through his election speeches and said no Prime Minister had done so before.

Kharge also attacked the ruling chambers for ignoring the opposition parties.

He accused many opposition parties of ousting their elected governments, including in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, and imprisoning chief ministers, saying this was against “democracy and the Constitution”.

He also appealed to Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to restore the statues of Mahatma Gandhi, BR Ambedkar and other leaders to their original places in the Parliament building.
