Five-year-old dies in firecracker accident in Jabalpur MP area

Jabalpur: A five-year-old boy died after a piece of steel pierced his stomach when firecrackers were set off to celebrate India’s victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, police said on Monday.

The incident occurred in the district’s Gohalpur area on Sunday, an official said.

Some children lit firecrackers and placed one under a steel glass, and the explosion sent steel fragments flying, said Pratiksha Marco, in-charge of Gohalpur police station.

One of the pieces pierced the stomach of the victim, Deepak Thakur, who was standing some distance away, she said.

The boy was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead, the official said.

The children had set off firecrackers the previous day to celebrate India’s victory in the T20 World Cup, she said, adding that police were examining the video footage and an investigation had been launched.
