NEW YORK — Houston Astros pitcher Shawn Dubin gave his team the ideal performance in the opener on Sunday afternoon.

Dubin, an Allegany native, made his first MLB start of the season after 14 relief appearances for Houston. He left the field in the fourth inning after allowing no hits at Citi Field against the Mets. In his longest appearance of the season in innings (3.1) and pitch count (55), Dubin left the field after a one-out walk in the fourth inning with his team leading 4-0.

Although this lead ultimately did not hold, Houston won 10-5 in the 11th inning.

Dubin struck out two and walked three. He and reliever Bryan King went hitless until the fifth inning.

Dubin now has a 4.91 ERA this season in 25.2 innings with 27 strikeouts and 14 walks. He is 1-1 with one save.

Making his MLB debut last season, Dubin made one start in three appearances in Houston before returning to Triple-A.

The Astros won the series in Flushing and surpassed the .500 mark for the first time this season with a 28-27 record. They begin a four-game series in Toronto on Monday.

“Once again, our guys battled,” Astros rookie manager Joe Espada told reporters after the game. “It started with Dubin, (he) gave us the innings we needed, got the ball to the bullpen and we got some big hits when we needed them. Proud of the effort.”
