Lonavala waterfall accident: How to stay safe while visiting waterfalls in monsoon season? | Travel

While one can enjoy waterfalls in their majestic glory during the monsoon season, they are also very dangerous during this time as there can be flash floods, slippery terrain, strong currents, rock falls and even lack of safety measures. On Sunday, five members of a family from Pune were swept into the Bhushi Dam in Maharashtra while enjoying a waterfall in the Lonavala region. During the rainy season, such incidents are often reported from waterfalls across the country. By following some simple measures, you can enjoy the waterfalls without risking your life. On your next monsoon trip to your favorite waterfall, make sure to do the following:

Go after checking the weather forecast
If there is a possibility of heavy rain, storms or flooding on the day of your trip to the waterfall, postpone the trip. Bad weather brings with it the risk of flash floods, landslides or mudslides, poor road conditions, reduced visibility and sometimes an increased presence of animals. Rainy weather can also make it difficult to find help in an emergency.
Avoid off-road adventures
It is fun to deviate from the designated trails to explore the origin of waterfalls and follow their trails, but the monsoon season is the worst time to do so due to the safety risks, so stick to the officially permitted trails. Also, heed the instructions of the locals, guides, signage in the regions and other officials on duty to avoid any kind of accident.

Avoid access to the waterfall pools
The natural pools beneath the falls can experience strong currents during the monsoon season, which can be dangerous even for swimmers. It can also be difficult for others to help you if the water level suddenly rises. The water quality can also be poor, which can lead to infections and diseases such as leptospirosis. If you cannot resist entering the pool, be alert, check the depth, stay in shallow areas, wear protective clothing and shoes, and supervise children if you have them with you.
Avoid driving at night
During the monsoon season, it can be dangerous to stay safe near waterfalls even during the day, so you should definitely avoid visiting these places at night. Not only will you have to contend with reduced visibility and be at an increased risk of accidents, falls or slips, but it will also be difficult to navigate the trails even if the lighting is good. Nocturnal animals in the area may also be disturbed if you roam near waterfalls at night, and this can also pose a safety risk. In case of an emergency, help may not arrive in time at night.
