Fremont man arrested after allegedly threatening neighbors

Teams worked for several hours to negotiate with the man. He surrendered peacefully after a gas cylinder was thrown into the house.

FREMONT, Mich. – A man is in custody Thursday after an argument with a neighbor led to a barricade situation at a home in Fremont.

According to authorities, officers first responded to a home on E Pine Street around 2 a.m. A 40-year-old man reportedly threatened his neighbor with a gun after an argument and then barricaded himself in a house. No one else was in the house.

Teams worked for several hours to negotiate with the man. He surrendered peacefully after the county emergency response team threw a gas cylinder into the house.

Newaygo County Sheriff Bob Mendham said using the canister was one of the most effective ways to handle the situation.

“Negotiations fell through and it was clear that he did not want to come out at that point, and we certainly do not want to send officers into a situation like that,” Mendham said. “So if we can cause a little discomfort and convince him to come out peacefully, that’s the best option.”

A protective order was issued for several hours in the area of S Division Street and S Merchant Street to Cedar Street and E Maple Street. Authorities said the decision to issue the order was due in part to its proximity to surrounding homes.

The shelter-in-place order has since been lifted.

Investigators say they are working to determine if the suspect and his neighbor had any previous problems. While the investigation is ongoing, police cannot say what the dispute was about.

Fremont Public Schools is currently operating a two-hour delay due to the incident.

This case will be presented to the Newaygo County Prosecutor’s Office for review once the investigation is complete.
