Fireworks Laws for the City of Houston

HOUSTON — It’s almost time to let the freedom bell ring — but that freedom won’t apply to setting off fireworks within Houston city limits.

As the Fourth of July approaches, it’s important to know the laws surrounding the use of fireworks in the city.

Not only is the use of fireworks illegal in the city of Houston and parts of Harris County, but it can also be dangerous.

If you are caught using fireworks illegally, you will not be issued a warning, but you will be immediately fined between $500 and $2,000 per firework, even if it is your children which make them explode.

It is legal to drive around town with fireworks in your vehicle. However, there are some restrictions.

While it is legal to purchase, possess and use consumer fireworks in unincorporated areas of Harris County, there are certain places where you cannot use them.

According to the Houston Fire Department, these unauthorized locations include locations near churches, hospitals, shelters, licensed daycares, or public or private elementary or secondary schools or institutions of higher education, unless the person receives written permission from that organization.

Firefighters warn that while fireworks and celebrations go hand in hand, they can cause serious burns and eye injuries when used incorrectly.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), approximately 19,500 fires caused by fireworks are reported to local fire departments in the United States each year.

The NFPA reports that more than a third of victims are under the age of 15, and about 44 percent of injuries are due to burns.
