Police arrest man who killed his neighbor and injured a pit bull in brutal stabbing in New York

A Brooklyn man is accused of killing his 37-year-old neighbor and injuring a pit bull in a wild stabbing, police and other sources said Sunday.

Anthony Sabato, 37, was arrested and charged with murder, robbery and aggravated animal cruelty in connection with the bloody murder of Thomas Machalchick.

Police were called to the building on Sands Street near Jay Street in Downtown Brooklyn shortly after 8 a.m. Friday. The victim was found on the 28th floor with a stab wound to the torso and a pit bull with numerous stab wounds, cops and sources said.

Meanwhile, the stabber and his girlfriend ran into another apartment in the building that provides long-term housing for formerly homeless people and locked themselves in, barricading the door, the Daily News previously reported.

The couple surrendered shortly after the police arrived and were taken into custody.

Paramedics rushed Machalchick to New York Presbyterian-Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, but he could not be saved.

The injured dog was taken to a local veterinary clinic in stable condition, police said.

Sabato was charged with the disturbing bloodshed Saturday afternoon and was ordered held without bail following an arraignment in Brooklyn Criminal Court.

Both Machalchick and Sabato lived at that address, police said.
