American winger Tim Weah’s red card suspension has been extended to two games

NEW YORK – The South American Football Confederation has extended the suspension of American winger Tim Weah to two games for punching Panamanian Roderick Miller during their Copa American group match on Thursday.

Weah received a red card in the 18th minute of the USA’s 2-1 loss, which automatically resulted in a one-match suspension. The South American Football Confederation said Weah was suspended for a second match and fined $3,000 by a judge of its disciplinary committee. The money will be deducted from the US Soccer Confederation’s payment to CONMEBOL for television, participation and/or prize money.

CONMEBOL stated that no appeal could be made against the disciplinary measure.

Weah will miss the United States’ group final against Uruguay on Monday night in Kansas City, Missouri, as well as a Copa America quarterfinal if the Americans advance.

The 23-year-old is a son of George Weah, the 1995 FIFA Footballer of the Year, whose four-year term as President of Liberia ended in January.

Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa was banned from the match by CONMEBOL because his team returned to the field too late for the second half in the first two matches.
