Federal politics live: Samantha Mostyn is sworn in as Governor General, Labour MPs react to Fatima Payman’s suspension

Fair to say Anne-Louise is not impressed by Fatima Payman.

Aly, who is Minister for Youth and Child Care, has also spoken out in support of Palestine in recent months. But just recently on RN Breakfast she said: said Payman had not acted correctly.

“Each of us follows our own path… I choose to do things in a way that I believe will make a significant difference to the people on the ground in Palestine. Fatima chooses to do it her way.”

Aly says Payman should have voted for Labor’s amendment to the Greens’ Palestine motion, which would have recognised Palestine as part of a just peace process.

“What is in the party manifesto is exactly what was proposed (in the amendment) … she could have voted for it if she represented the values of the Labour Party.”

Aly also said Payman did not express her opinion on the motion when it was mentioned at a Labour Party meeting.

She declined to comment on the Prime Minister’s indefinite suspension of Payman and expressed hope that Payman would remain in the party.

And she said it had been “a very difficult time” for Payman and expressed regret that a young Muslim woman had had a negative experience.

“I was pretty emotional because I thought I was going to get the bullets, I was going to get the death threats, but it would be easier for the next person… I was hoping that things might be different for the person who comes after me.”

However, she made no secret of her disagreement with Payman, who is from her state of Western Australia, and said her attempts to contact her had gone unanswered.
