A hot week with some afternoon thunderstorms

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) –

The weather will remain hot until Monday, but the chance of rain will be slightly higher in the afternoon.

Before any showers or thunderstorms arrive, however, another very hot day is expected. Heat levels are likely to be between 38 and 43 degrees, with highs around 35 degrees for many. Continue to stay hydrated and cool down as best you can, and be cautious when spending long periods outdoors.

A few sudden showers or thunderstorms may develop starting in the afternoon. We are not expecting any downpours and there should still be plenty of breaks in the rain, but keep a close eye on the skies. A weak cold front lingering north of the area may also contribute to the development of thunderstorms, which may also last into the evening hours.

That front will move out on Tuesday, and the rest of the week looks to follow a typical summer pattern. A nearby area of high pressure aloft will keep it hot in the afternoon, with highs in the 90s and 100s. Scattered to isolated afternoon thunderstorms are expected every day throughout the work week. This will also be true for the Fourth of July, although right now it looks like most of the rain should be over by fireworks time. Of course, we’ll be keeping a close eye on that.

In the tropics, Beryl has rapidly intensified and is now the first major hurricane of the year. It will continue to move westward through the Lesser Antilles and eventually make its way into the Caribbean early this week. There is still a lot of uncertainty about both its strength and its path through the Caribbean, and any impacts to the Gulf would be about a week away. So it’s nothing to get excited about right now, but we’ll still be keeping a close eye on it. We’re also keeping an eye on a few other tropical waves that are no concern for the SWLA.
