DC police remove nearly 300 illegal mopeds from the streets in recent raid

District police said hundreds of illegal mopeds were removed from the streets as part of Operation Ride Right, a road safety program to combat the illegal use of mopeds and scooters.

District police said hundreds of illegal mopeds were removed from the streets as part of Operation Ride Right, a road safety program to combat the illegal use of mopeds and scooters.

The safety program, which began on June 5, ran for two weeks. Police told WTOP that during that time they confiscated 273 scooters, arrested 81 people and issued 161 citations.

Police have announced that they will resume Operation Ride Right in the future. In the meantime, they are distributing leaflets highlighting laws and regulations for motorized bicycles.

The flyers remind riders of Washington State laws governing mopeds and scooters, including:

  • Mopeds and scooters are not allowed to ride on bike paths, sidewalks or between lanes.
  • Drivers must obey all normal traffic laws, such as stopping at red lights.
  • Only one person may ride in the vehicle at a time.
  • All riders must wear a helmet and have a valid driver’s license, license plate, registration and insurance to operate a moped or scooter.
