Alert level raised at several US bases in Europe

Some U.S. military bases in Europe are on heightened alert as new fears of a terrorist attack arise. The bases include the garrison in Stuttgart, where the U.S. European Command is based. The “Charlie” alert level was introduced on Sunday. A military official said this is the highest threat level “in at least 10 years,” CNN reports. Army guidelines state that this alert level “applies when an incident occurs or intelligence is received indicating that some form of terrorist act or attack on personnel or facilities is likely.”

Similar instructions were sent to Rhineland-Palatinate and Ramstein Air Bases in Germany, which together form the largest U.S. military community abroad. Stars and Stripes. Aviano Air Base in Italy has also been referred to Charlie, and other facilities in Italy have increased security measures. European authorities recently issued alerts related to the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris and the Euro 24 soccer championship currently underway in Germany. (More U.S. military reports.)
