Strong to severe storms will be observed through early Friday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Thursday is a First alert weather day for central Alabama as bouts of potentially strong to severe storms move across our area.

The first round will descend southwards during the morning hours, which may result in heavy rain, frequent lightning, damaging winds and large hail. We are also keeping a close eye on potential isolated development south of Interstate 20 in the early afternoon hours.

A Tornado watch in effect until 10 a.m. for areas primarily along and north of Interstate 20. After a possible lull around midday, a second round of storms could occur after 3 p.m., continuing bad weather into the overnight hours. The same threats apply to this second round, but the greater risk will be areas south of Interstate 20.

As soon as we get past early Friday morning, a strong cold front will arrive – ours The next big thing and the culprit behind the stormy weather – will slide into Alabama, ushering in a welcome respite from the muggy air. In the meantime, it will remain very warm and humid today with highs in the 80s.

Mother’s Day weekend will be much quieter, drier and more pleasant. Highs will be closer to average in the upper 70s to lower 80s, with morning lows in the 50s cool and pleasant.

Expect more dry sunshine and just a few passing clouds. However, as we look ahead to next week, an unclear pattern is likely to emerge again, which could bring rain and storms off and on each day. We must closely monitor these storm waves for the possibility of organized severe threats or flooding risks.
