Sky Sports F1 apologises after incident with George Russell at Austrian Grand Prix | F1 | Sport

The damage meant the end of Norris’ race. Verstappen finished fifth after a 10-second penalty. And Russell took full advantage of the chaos to take the win ahead of Oscar Piastri of McLaren and Carlos Sainz of Ferrari.

The three podium finishers went into the cooling room immediately after the Grand Prix ended and chatted while watching highlights of the race on a big screen. And as the trio watched the decisive collision, Russell appeared to utter the words “Oh, shit.”

The race winner added: “That was a very cool fight!” To which Piastri laughed and said: “Well, you won the race because of that…”

Afterwards, Harry Benjamin, F1 commentator for Sky Sports, apologized to viewers for the obscene language recorded by the broadcaster’s camera.

Russell’s victory was his first since the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in November 2022. The Briton is currently seventh in this year’s drivers’ championship with 111 points.

And after his triumph in Austria, the 26-year-old said: “The team did a great job of getting us into this fight and you have to be there to pick up the pieces and that was the situation with us.”

“I couldn’t believe how close (we) were to Max and Lando. It was a possibility – you always dream – but like I said, you’re so proud to be back on the top step.

“The team has worked so hard and made so much progress since the start of the season. The last two races have been incredible and there is much more to come.”

“It’s no secret that Red Bull and Max, as well as McLaren with Lando, are still a little ahead. But we always try to get to third place in the last races. If something happens up front, we’ll catch up. What an exciting time for us.”

“We’re riding a wave at the moment, the last three races have been incredible. I think realistically we probably could have won the race in Canada. But that makes up for one too many mistakes on my part.”
