1 dead, teenager arrested after shooting in southern Utah

WASHINGTON, Washington County — A minor boy was arrested in connection with the shooting death of a man who lived in an apartment complex early Sunday.

At around 2 a.m., Washington Police received reports of gunfire at an apartment complex near 20 N. Red Trail. When officers arrived and entered the apartment, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. Police began life-saving measures until a medical team arrived and transported the man to St. George Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

According to Greg Lovell of the Washington Police Department, police identified the suspect from surveillance footage of the apartment complex. A brief description was released to alert residents through the emergency system. Police learned the teen lived in the same complex and was taken into custody shortly before 7 a.m., Lovell said.

The possible cause of the shooting was still being investigated on Sunday.

“That’s what we’re trying to find out right now, to find out what the motive was and how it all happened. Whether they are related or know each other and how that relationship came about,” Lovell said of the motive.

A woman was present at the time of the shooting, but her relationship to the two individuals is unknown.
