Man shot dead by police in Downey – NBC Los Angeles

A man was shot and killed in a police-involved shooting in Downey, authorities said Sunday.

According to Downey police, officers were called to a disturbance call in the 7100 block of Stewart and Gray Road around 6:15 p.m. Saturday.

“Officers arrived on scene and during their investigation, an officer-involved shooting occurred,” a police statement said. “A male suspect was shot and succumbed to his injuries.”

No officers were injured and no other injuries were reported.

Witnesses said the man, who reportedly suffers from mental health issues, was setting off fireworks in the backyard and got into an argument with a neighbor before he was shot by arriving police officers.

Downey police said the investigation was being handled by the California Department of Justice.
