Man dead, teenager in custody after shooting at Washington County apartment complex

WASHINGTON, Washington County — A man is dead after being shot Sunday night, and an underage teenager is in custody. Police say the teen is the suspected shooter.

Greg Lovell of the Washington City Police Department said the 911 call came in just before 2 a.m. Sunday and someone reported gunshots outside the Trailhead Apartments.

Lovell said officers arrived and entered one of the units through the front door. They found a man on the ground who had been shot and immediately attempted to save his life. Medical teams arrived shortly afterward and he was rushed to St. George Regional Hospital.

When he arrived, hospital staff pronounced him dead.

Officers then obtained surveillance footage that gave them a description of the suspect and information that he also lived in the complex. Officers found and arrested him shortly before 7 a.m., Lovell said.

“The Washington City Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family,” Lovell later said in a press release. “We also want to thank everyone who assisted with this incident and the local citizens.”

Lovell said WCPD does not know what motive the suspect may have had, nor does it know if the suspect knew the victim. He added that there was a woman who witnessed the shooting. Her relationship to the shooter or the suspect was also unknown.

Lovell said the case is still under investigation and no further information would be released Sunday.
