Man arrested after climbing onto roof of European Championship stadium during Germany vs Denmark match

A man was arrested for climbing onto the roof of the Signal Iduna Park during the European Championship match between Germany and Denmark.

Dortmund police confirmed in a statement on Sunday that a 21-year-old man had been arrested after “a person climbed onto the roof of the stadium” during Germany’s 2-0 win in the round of 16.

Local police said the man, who comes from the nearby city of Osnabrück, was being investigated for trespassing.

The man was carrying camera equipment, police said. During questioning, he allegedly said he wanted to take “good photos.”

Police spokesman Peter Bandermann said on Saturday: “During the game, a person climbed onto the stadium roof at around 10:27 p.m. Police officers approached the person to speak to them and ensure a safe way off the roof.”

“A police helicopter illuminated the stadium roof. No information can currently be given about the motive or the identity of the man.”

UEFA praised the police’s work in a statement on Sunday, adding that “security measures at all venues will continue to be reviewed” following the incident.

A statement said: “Safety in the stadium, on the pitch and in team facilities is UEFA’s highest priority.

“UEFA would like to thank the police, the stadium and the local authorities for their cooperation in the incident last night in Dortmund, where a person was arrested by police on the stadium roof.”

The incident occurred after play was temporarily suspended due to adverse weather conditions during a thunderstorm.

Referee Michael Oliver stopped the game in the 36th minute and led the players off the pitch amid lightning strikes and thunder.

“Due to adverse weather conditions, the game has been cancelled. Further information will follow shortly,” said a stadium statement.

The match was halted for about 25 minutes before resuming and those gathered in the city’s fan zones were evacuated.
