A heat advisory is in effect for residents of Somerset, Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean counties on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. High temperatures are expected, with heat indices reaching 35 to 38 degrees Celsius due to high humidity. At the same time, there is a high risk of rip currents on all south-facing beaches in New York throughout the weekend, posing significant dangers to beachgoers.

Thunderstorm on Saturday evening

The forecast for Saturday night includes a yellow warning as a strong thunderstorm front approaches the region. These storms, which have already triggered tornado warnings in Pennsylvania, are expected to reach the area with isolated severe conditions. The main dangers are heavy rain and gusty winds. After the first storm front passes through, a few isolated storms may still move through during the overnight hours, continuing to maintain muggy conditions with lows around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sunday Heavy storms

There may be a few isolated thunderstorms Sunday morning before the sun breaks through and temperatures quickly rise to the high 30s to low 35s. With high humidity, the heat index will be between the high 35s and low 38s, especially in central and southern New Jersey. This combination of heat and humidity will create an unsettled atmosphere and favor strong to severe thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

These storms are expected to bring damaging winds, hail, torrential rain, and possibly even isolated tornadoes. Given the tropical air mass, the storms could bring significant rainfall, totaling between 2 and 3 inches in some areas. This heavy rainfall increases the risk of flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas and urban areas with poor drainage.

Conditions after the storm

As the storms move away, clearing skies and decreasing humidity are expected later Sunday evening, bringing some relief from the oppressive weather. The transition will mark the end of the severe weather threat and provide residents with some much-needed respite.

Preparation and safety measures

Given the severe weather forecast, residents are urged to take necessary precautions. The National Weather Service recommends staying hydrated and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours. Beachgoers should heed rip current warnings and avoid swimming in dangerous conditions.

For those in the path of the storms, it’s important to stay up to date with weather reports and have an emergency plan ready. Secure outdoor items that could become projectiles in high winds, and make sure flashlights, batteries, and other emergency supplies are close at hand. In the event of a flash flood, avoid traveling through flooded areas and seek higher ground if necessary. Remember that just a few inches of flowing water is enough to knock a person over or sweep away a vehicle.
