Father sentenced to life imprisonment for raping his daughter in Panchagarh

A local court sentenced a man to life imprisonment on Sunday for raping his 16-year-old daughter.

The court also imposed a fine of Taka 50,000 on Saiful Islam, 49, a resident of Kamata Kajaldighi Union of Panchagarh Sadar, and additionally imposed one-year imprisonment in default.

Judge BM Tariqul Kabir of the Panchagarh Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal announced the verdict.

The victim’s mother filed the case with Panchagarh Sadar police station on November 18, 2023.

Within seven months of filing the lawsuit, the court completed the trial and rendered judgment.

Defense attorney Ahsan Ullah Al Habib Labu confirmed the verdict, expressed his dissatisfaction with the verdict and announced that he would appeal to a higher court.

Lawyer Azizur Rahman Azu, special public prosecutor of the Panchagarh Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, said the verdict sends a strong message to the society and deters potential perpetrators.

According to case details and court records, the plaintiff is Saiful Islam’s first wife, with whom he has five children – two daughters and three sons.

The family feud began when Saiful remarried. Five years ago, the plaintiff moved back to her parents’ house with two sons and two daughters. Last August, the couple officially separated because Saiful could not support the children.

The incident occurred on September 24 last year when the victim was visiting her father’s house for a cousin’s wedding.

The victim’s mother filed a rape complaint with Sadar police station, which was investigated by Sub-Inspector Shamsujjoha Sarkar.

The indictment was presented to the court on March 28.

After a seven-month trial in which eight witnesses testified, the court delivered its verdict.
