Burlington man arrested after collision with house, multiple cars, police car and several gravestones

A Burlington man is behind bars this weekend after leading police on a chase in a stolen car, crashing into a house, several cars, a patrol car and tombstones. According to Burlington police, their department received reports of a beige Ford F-250 driving erratically around Riverside Avenue around 12:30 Friday afternoon. A witness said the pickup truck skidded and nearly struck surrounding vehicles as it approached the Winooski traffic circle. About 10 minutes later, Burlington police received another call reporting the pickup truck was driving just as erratically, crashing into a parked vehicle before speeding off toward North Winooski Avenue. After the 911 caller gave dispatch the license plate number, officers learned the F-250 had been stolen in Essex, Vermont. BPD then received another 911 call reporting that the pickup was now in the Pearl Street area of ​​Burlington. Another report said the F-250 struck a curb, causing it to travel onto the sidewalk of the Downtown Transit Center on Cherry Street. Officials said Burlington Fire Department was on scene at the time and advised emergency responders the direction the Ford was traveling, but they lost sight of it after it turned onto North Street. Burlington police said a call then came in reporting that the F-250 crashed into a home on Manhattan Drive and then drove off, striking another parked car. BPD received several more 911 calls that led them to find the truck in the Riverside Avenue area, where the pursuit began. Despite flashing lights and sirens, the Ford continued the pursuit. While attempting to avoid police cars coming into the area, the F-250 skidded and struck a vehicle that had been stopped in traffic at a light. According to police, the suspect rammed the truck into the vehicle he had collided with before the Ford broke away from surrounding officers and drove off again. According to BPD, the truck sped down North Winooski Avenue and entered St. Joseph’s Cemetery, where it then crashed into a headstone. Once again, despite officers’ orders to get out of the truck, the suspect continued driving to get away from the headstone. According to police, the Ford struck a patrol car with officers standing next to it. As the F-250 drove deeper into the cemetery, it struck a second headstone, according to police. The suspect got out of the truck and ran down a hill after becoming stuck on an embankment. Authorities said officers were at the bottom of the hill where they arrested the suspect, 48-year-old Thomas O’Halloran. While in custody, BPD said O’Halloran bit an officer on the leg, injuring him. O’Halloran was taken to Northwest Correctional Facility on $10,000 bail. He is due in court at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 1. O’Halloran is charged with several major and minor offenses, including assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault on a police officer and multiple counts of leaving the scene of an accident.

About ten minutes later, Burlington Police received another call informing them that the truck was driving just as erratically, colliding with a parked vehicle and then speeding away toward North Winooski Avenue.

After the 911 caller gave the license plate number to dispatch, officers learned that the F-250 had been stolen in Essex, Vermont.

Another 911 call was then made to BPD reporting that the truck was now in the Pearl Street area of ​​Burlington. Another report stated that the F-250 struck a curb and therefore traveled onto the sidewalk of the Downtown Transit Center on Cherry Street.

Officials said Burlington firefighters were on the scene at the time and notified emergency responders of the direction the Ford was traveling, but lost sight of it after it turned onto North Street.

According to BPD, the truck sped down North Winooski Avenue and entered St. Joseph’s Cemetery, where it then struck a headstone. Again, despite officers’ orders to get out of the truck, the suspect continued driving to get away from the headstone. Police said the Ford struck a patrol car that officers were standing next to.

Authorities said officers were stationed at the foot of the hill and arrested the suspect, 48-year-old Thomas O’Halloran.

According to BPD, O’Halloran bit and injured an officer in the leg while in custody.

O’Halloran was remanded to the Northwest Correctional Facility on $10,000 bail and is due in court on Monday, July 1, at 10:30 a.m.

O’Halloran faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery on a police officer and multiple counts of leaving the scene of an accident.
