Vuelta winner Horner injured in training accident

MILAN (AP) — Spanish Vuelta champion Chris Horner has been hospitalized with a punctured lung, four broken ribs and cuts to his head after a training accident in northern Italy.

The Lampre team said that the details of the 42-year-old US driver’s accident “have yet to be evaluated, but it appears that he was probably hit by a car in the afternoon.”

Lampre said Horner was taken to the Manzoni hospital in Lecco, where team doctor Luca Pollastri met him to coordinate treatment.

Lampre says the cuts on Horner’s head required stitches, although a medical examination did not show a concussion.

Horner won the Vuelta last year at the age of 41, becoming the oldest Grand Tour champion.
