OVERNIGHT: Multiple tornadoes struck northern Alabama and southern Tennessee Wednesday evening. The Limestone County EMA reported at least one home was destroyed in the Brigadoon community on the north shore of Wheeler Lake. TORNADO WATCH: A tornado watch has been issued until 10 a.m. for counties generally along and north of I-20. Remember that a tornado warning means that tornado warnings are possible. Have reliable ways to hear alerts this morning should they be needed. ALARM THURSDAY: MULTIPLE ROUNDS OF STORMS The next round of severe thunderstorms will hit northern Alabama in the early morning hours and move south into the Birmingham area by mid-morning. Some heavy rain is possible during the morning rush, and a few storms could be severe through 10 a.m. Thursday. Most of Thursday will be warm, humid and rain-free once the first wave of storms leaves the area. Expect a high in the lower 80s with a south-southwest breeze around 10 to 15 mph and partly sunny skies. The next wave of severe storms will arrive from the west after 7 p.m. and will appear to be more focused on the southern half of Alabama through Thursday night and Friday morning. A BREAK FROM THE HEAT A strong cold front in May will sweep away the sticky, stormy weather and usher in a much more pleasant scenario for Alabama on Friday and Saturday. Temperatures will only climb into the 70s (about 3 to 6 degrees below average for early May) and overnight lows will fall into the upper 40s to lower 50s on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Warm, moist air will creep northward again Sunday afternoon, and that will be just enough to consider a chance for a brief shower or two with thickening clouds. CHANCES OF RAIN NEXT WEEKBirmingham is not in a drought yet, but we are in a rainfall deficit. Since March 1, just 8.28 inches of rain has fallen at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport. That is around 30 percent less than the normal value for the last two months. Next week we have a chance to catch up on precipitation in central Alabama. Expect several more days of scattered showers and storms, with more widespread rainfall (and storms) expected on Thursday and Friday next week. Stay informed about the weather.
