New York broadcasting icon steps away from the mic

It’s official, the Buffalo Bills will have a new voice heading into the upcoming season.

This morning, the Bills announced that John Murphy is leaving the broadcast booth ahead of the season.

Murphy grew up in Lockport and worked for WKBW for years before heading to the broadcast booth during Bills games.

He had been the Bills’ play-by-play announcer since 2003, when he took over from Van Miller, who retired that year. Murphy had acted as a color analyst for Miller from 1994 to 2003.

Murphy played a major role in sports broadcasting here in Western New York. He was inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2019.

He received the Dick Gallagher Legacy Award from the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame in 2022 for all he has done for local sports and the Western New York community.
