Police footage shows a 13-year-old boy pointing a gun at a police officer seconds before he was shot

UTICA, NY (WSYR-TV) — The Utica Police Department has released footage from officers’ uniformed cameras showing a 13-year-old pointing a gun at them seconds before an officer shoots the teen.

Along with the video, a police spokesman released new details about why officers stopped 13-year-old Nyah Mway before he was shot.

According to police, officers approached Mway and another 13-year-old because they both matched the description of two suspects wanted in connection with two recent robberies in the West Utica area.

“The suspects were described as Asian males brandishing a black firearm and violently demanding and stealing property from their victims,” ​​police said, “… one was on foot and the other was on a bicycle.”

After being asked to be searched for weapons, a video shows Mway running away.

Seconds later, police camera footage shows Mway pointing a gun.

“Gun! I need a gun!” the officer shouted to his colleagues who were chasing him before he arrested the suspect.

“Drop it! Drop it!” another officer shouted at least twice, the clips show. Then a single gunshot rang out.

The officers called for help and administered first aid themselves before an ambulance arrived.

Along with the video, police released evidence photos showing the weapon found on Mway’s body. Police have since determined that it is an air pistol. Photos show it with the brand name “Glock.”

“We will cooperate fully with the Attorney General’s Office,” Utica Police Chief Mark Williams said Saturday morning. “They will ultimately make the decision as to whether the shooting of the individual was justified or not.”

Utica Police released the names of the officers involved:

  • Patrick Husnay, who fired the shot
  • Bryce Patterson
  • Andrew Citriniti

All three were on leave, a department policy following a shooting involving a police officer.
