UTICA, NY – The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations has opened an investigation into the death of 13-year-old Nyah Mway of Utica.

The teenager was shot and killed by a Utica police officer on Friday evening.


Investigation underway into fatal shooting of Utica teenager by police officer

Community members expressed anger and frustration at a press conference following the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old by a police officer in Utica on Friday night.

“In the early morning hours of June 29, UPD officers approached 13-year-old Nyah Mway, who reportedly displayed what appeared to be a handgun. A struggle ensued during which an officer fired his service weapon, striking Mway. Mway was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Officers recovered an air rifle at the scene,” the Attorney General’s Office said in a press release.
