At least 8 injured, one seriously, in accident involving church bus in Demorest

GA 365 South at Demorest-Mt. Airy Highway has reopened after a two-vehicle crash involving a church bus. Authorities said at least eight people were hospitalized, including a teenager who was flown by helicopter to Egleston Hospital in Atlanta.

Several of the injured, including the teenager, were in a pickup truck belonging to River Point Community Church in Demorest. The other vehicle involved was a Toyota 4-Runner. Church members told Now Habersham that the group had been working at the church that morning preparing for a mission trip and was on its way to the Chattahoochee River to go rafting when the accident occurred.

The accident was reported to Habersham County 911 at approximately 1:39 p.m. on Saturday, June 29. The accident closed the southbound lanes of GA 365 near the intersection. The road remained closed for several hours while authorities investigated the accident.

According to Rob Moore, spokesman for Habersham County Emergency Services, four people were taken to the hospital by ambulance and three others were transported by private vehicle. Several other people sustained minor injuries but were not transported.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident. Now, Habersham has asked GSP for more information and will continue to update this story as new details emerge.
