Utica police identify officer who fatally shot boy; releases video of chase and shooting

Utica, NY – Utica police on Saturday night released footage from the body cameras of three officers involved in a foot chase that ended with one of them shooting a 13-year-old boy.

They also identified the officer who fired his weapon as Patrick Husnay, who has been with the department for six years.

According to police, the videos show the boy aiming an object at the police officers that turned out to be a replica of a Glock air pistol.

The boy killed was Nyah Mway.

He and another boy were stopped in the 900 block of Shaw Street around 10:18 p.m. Friday.

Body camera videos show one of the officers asking Nyah to raise his hands to check whether he was carrying weapons.

As he does so, Nyah suddenly runs down the street. The officers run after him, repeatedly yelling at him to “stop reaching for him.”

Then they scream: “Drop it.”

Another says: “He has a gun.”

Nyah is knocked to the ground after he turns to face a police officer and appears to be aiming something at him. As Nyah and the officers lie on the ground, a gunshot rings out.

The officers move away from the boy. The chase until the shots are fired lasted about 15 seconds.

Police said they found a Glock air rifle with a detachable magazine.

Husnay, the officer who fired the shot, and two others involved in the chase – Bryce Patterson and Andrew Citriniti – were placed on paid leave.

Nyah and the other boy, who was also 13, were stopped because they matched the description of the robbery suspects, police said in a press release Saturday evening.

The suspects were involved in at least two robberies and were described as “an Asian man and a black man, one on foot and the other on a bicycle,” police said.

Nyah and the other boy, who was on foot and riding a bicycle, were stopped by police based on that description because they had been near one of the robberies that occurred at about the same time the previous evening, police said.

Police said they were also stopped for walking on the street, which is an offense.

Utica police said they have launched an internal investigation, and the state Attorney General’s office has also launched such an investigation, as required by law.

According to Utica Police, a replica Glock air pistol was pointed at an officer during a foot chase on Friday, June 28, 2024.
